Scoliosis Explained.

Scoliosis varies a lot from person to person. Here are the basics you should know.

  • Patients may describe one or more of the following:

    • Uneven shoulders or hips

    • One shoulder blade is more prominent than the other

    • Back pain

    • Rib pain

  • Statistics show that approximately 3% of the population are affected by scoliosis. Onset can occur in early childhood but most commonly occur during a growth spurt or during puberty. It is not known what the exact cause is however doctors believe there is a genetic link because it tends to run in families.

  • Scoliosis can vary a lot from person to person. Our role as physiotherapists is to help prevent the curve from progressing and provide effective, non invasive treatment.

We also support clients who have already had surgery. In short, we treat all types of spinal conditions, from mild to severe scoliosis as well as other spinal issues.

Scoliosis treatment focuses on improving posture, strengthening the spine and teaching your body how to move in a more balanced way. We assess your curve, build a personalised program and use targeted exercises, education and posture training to support long term spinal health.

How does a scoliosis specialist treat scoliosis?

Scoliosis treatment depends on the size of the curve and how much more the patient is likely to grow. Children with minor curves may need regular checkups to see if the curve is getting worse as they grow, where as teenagers or adults who have mild curves often don't need treatment.

The PSSE program we use has gained popularity as a non-invasive method for treating scoliosis and other spinal disorders. According to Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT)’s recommendations, PSSE includes the following:

Why choose us for scoliosis treatment?

  • Lasting relief, not endless visits.

We want you to live pain-free, not have to come back every week. Our goal is to find the root cause and fix it for good, not just give temporary relief to a symptom.

  • Treatment from your first visit.

Whilst most clinics use the first 1-2 sessions for discussions, we start hands-on treatment right away for immediate relief, with longer appointments to ensure top quality care.

  • Multi-disciplinary treatment.

We are not a crack-and-go clinic. We use a range of modalities including active release technique, dry needling, cupping, exercise rehab and more for lasting results.

Scoliosis Treatment FAQ

  • Your first appointment includes a full review of your history, symptoms, and any previous treatment. We then complete a detailed physical assessment, posture measurements, and, when available, review your full-spine X-ray.

At the end of the session, you’ll receive a clear diagnosis, scoliosis classification, and a personalised treatment plan.

  • We assess your curve pattern, posture, mobility, and muscle imbalances using a combination of visual assessment, posture-related measurements, functional testing, and X-ray review where appropriate.

  • This program uses targeted, scoliosis-specific exercises designed to improve posture, spinal alignment, strength, and movement control. Each program is tailored to your curve type and daily needs.

  • Scoliosis management is suitable for children, teens, and adults with mild, moderate, or long-standing curves.

It supports people with pain, postural changes, or those wanting to better manage their condition conservatively.

  • While exercise-based programs may improve posture, mobility, and comfort, the goal is primarily to manage symptoms and support long-term spinal health. Curve reduction depends on age, flexibility, growth, and curve severity.

  • Many people notice improved posture, awareness, and movement within the first few sessions. Long-term changes depend on the consistency of exercises, the severity of your curve, and your individual goals.

  • No referral is required. You can book directly for an Initial Scoliosis Consultation or follow-up exercise sessions whenever you're ready.
