Scoliosis Explained.

Scoliosis varies a lot from person to person. Here are the basics you should know.

  • Patients may describe one or more of the following:

    • Uneven shoulders or hips

    • One shoulder blade is more prominent than the other

    • Changes in spinal alignment related to spinal curvature

    • Back pain

    • Rib pain

  • Statistics show that approximately 3% of the population are affected by scoliosis. Onset can occur in early childhood but most commonly occurs during a growth spurt or during puberty.

This can include childhood scoliosis and, in some cases, neuromuscular scoliosis. The exact cause is often unknown, however doctors believe there is a genetic link because it tends to run in families.

  • Scoliosis can vary significantly depending on the individual, the location of the spinal curve, and its severity. Our role as physiotherapists is to provide conservative treatment and scoliosis support to help manage the spinal curve and reduce the risk of progression.

We also support clients who have already had surgery. In short, we treat all types of spinal conditions, from mild scoliosis and moderate scoliosis through to adult scoliosis, as well as other spinal issues involving the thoracic spine.

Scoliosis treatment focuses on improving posture, strengthening the spine, and teaching the body to move in a more balanced way.

For scoliosis patients, this non surgical treatment approach includes assessment by a qualified health professional, personalised exercise programs, education, and posture training to support long-term spinal health.

How does a scoliosis specialist treat scoliosis?

Scoliosis treatment depends on the size of the curve and how much more the patient is likely to grow. Children with minor curves may need regular checkups to see if the curve is getting worse as they grow, where as teenagers or adults who have mild curves often don't need treatment.

The PSSE program we use has gained popularity as a non-invasive method for treating scoliosis and other spinal disorders. According to Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT)’s recommendations, PSSE includes the following:

Why choose us for scoliosis treatment?

  • Specialised scoliosis care.

Scoliosis is not just back pain. It involves spinal curves, rotation, muscle imbalance, and altered movement patterns. Our approach is built specifically around how scoliosis affects the body, rather than using one-size-fits-all techniques.

  • Fully personalised to your curve.

No two scoliosis cases are the same. We assess your posture, movement, strength, and curve presentation, then build a plan tailored to your spine. Whether your goal is pain relief, better posture, improved function, or long term management, your care is customised to you.

  • Lasting relief, not short term fixes.

Scoliosis often requires ongoing management rather than quick adjustments. We focus on improving movement, strength, and control around your spine so you can manage symptoms long term, stay active, and reduce flare ups over time.

Scoliosis Treatment FAQ

  • Your first appointment includes a full review of your history, symptoms, and any previous treatment. This allows your physiotherapist to understand how scoliosis is affecting your spinal curve and daily function. We then complete a detailed physical assessment, posture measurements, and, when available, review your full-spine X-ray.

At the end of the session, you’ll receive a clear diagnosis, scoliosis classification, and a personalised conservative treatment plan.

  • We assess your curve pattern, posture, mobility, and muscle imbalances using a combination of visual assessment, posture-related measurements, functional testing, and X-ray review where appropriate.

This helps us understand the type of spinal curvature involved and whether the thoracic spine is affected.

  • This program uses targeted, scoliosis-specific exercises designed to improve posture, spinal alignment, strength, and movement control. It is a non-surgical treatment delivered through physical therapy and tailored to each individual's spinal curve and lifestyle needs.

  • Scoliosis management is suitable for children, teens, and adults with mild, moderate, or long-standing curves, including mild scoliosis, moderate scoliosis, and adult scoliosis.

It supports people with pain, postural changes, or those wanting to better manage their condition as a long-term treatment option.

  • While exercise-based programs may improve posture, mobility, and comfort, the goal is primarily to manage symptoms and support long-term spinal health. For scoliosis patients, changes to a spinal curve depend on age, flexibility, and curve severity rather than a guaranteed reduction.

  • Many people notice improved posture, awareness, and movement within the first few sessions. Long-term changes depend on consistency, curve severity, and whether the condition involves adult scoliosis or childhood scoliosis.

  • No referral is required. You can book directly for an Initial Scoliosis Consultation or follow-up exercise sessions whenever you're ready with a qualified health professional.

  • Effective treatment of scoliosis necessitates a specialised evaluation and therapy regimen to pinpoint the underlying cause.

Our practice is rooted in the BSPTS Schroth-based approach, recognised as one of the most proven methods for treating scoliosis and related spinal disorders worldwide.

This approach includes a customised exercise program designed to rectify scoliotic posture, operating under the premise that such posture contributes to curve advancement.

At A Plus Physio Clinic, we offer:

    • Exploring medical history, and potential risks of developing major scoliosis.

    • The state of 3D full body laser scanning combined with photographs and computer aided design allows the full postural analysis and to design and build an individual exercise program specific to each patient for the best outcomes.

    • Comprehensive assessment and deconstruction of the components of the scoliosis curve to get our clients understand and internalise their existing curve profile.

    • X-Ray Review (measurement of scoliosis angles rotations, and translations,). It is essential that the patient presents at our centre with a current set of EOS FULL SPINE x-rays.

    • Physical measurements, neurological assessment, specific scoliosis assessment for spinal torsion by using a clinometer.

    • Interpretation of proposed treatment, including expected outcome and treatment timeline.

    • Scoliosis specific exercise program with our unique approach, 3D Movement Correction.

  • We firmly believe that a comprehensive 1-hour initial appointment is essential to understand you not only as someone with scoliosis, but as a whole person.

Following this consultation, a scoliosis-specific exercise program is implemented based on your individual presentation and curve profile.

During sessions, physiotherapy scoliosis-specific exercises incorporate 3D Movement Correction techniques to address the spine from multiple planes. This ensures a personalised and non surgical treatment approach suited to your specific needs.

    Our aim is to:

    • Decrease progression of a scoliotic curve

    • Improve posture

    • Reduce pain

    • Increase functional tolerance

    • Increase quality of life
